"Mon petit livre, à présent chez l'imprimeur, porte le titre Moïse et le Monothéisme, et je pense que vous pourrez le voir vous-même au printemps prochain. Il contient une recherche fondée sur des hypothèses analytiques sur l'origine de la religion, et plus particulièrement du monothéisme juif, et c'est surtout un prolongement et un développement d'un autre travail que j'ai publié il y a 25 ans sous le titre Totem et Tabou. Les nouvelles idées ne viennent pas facilement dans l'esprit d'un vieil homme; il ne lui reste plus qu'à se répéter.

"My little book, at present at the printer's, bears the title Moses and Monotheism, as I trust you will be seeing for yourself next spring. It contains an investigation based on analytical assumptions of the origin of religion, specifically Jewish monotheism, and is essentially a sequel to and an expansion of another work which I published 25 years ago under the title Totem and Taboo. New ideas do not come easily to an old man; there is nothing left for him to do but repeat himself.
It can be called an attack on religion only in so far as any scientific investigation of religious belief presupposes disbelief. Neither in my private life nor in my writings have I ever made a secret of my being an out-and-out unbeliever."
