"Expertise sur le traitement électrique des névrosés de guerre"

"Gutachten über die elektrische Behandlung der Kriegs-neurotiker" (Expertise sur le traitement électrique des névrosés de guerre) par le prof. Dr. Sigmund Freud, soumis à la Commission instituée pour étudier le traitement des névrosés de guerre par les médecins militaires autrichiens, le 25 février 1920.

Wagner-Jauregg, qui avait administré des courants faradiques dans le traitement des névrosés de guerre souffrant de tremblements, devait apparaître devant la Commission. Freud était l'un des deux experts en la matière. Dans son mémorandum, il a souligné sa conviction personnelle que le professeur Wagner-Jauregg n'aurait jamais laissé le traitement électrique s'intensifier au point de devenir cruel. Lors de la réunion de la Commission, il y eut une discussion acerbe sur la psychanalyse.

"Quand j'ai dû intervenir en tant qu'expert devant une commission pour la recherche sur la violation des fonctions militaires dans le cadre d'un procès contre Wagner, j'ai fait à nouveau l'expérience de l'hypocrisie et du malveillance des psychiatres d'ici. Mais naturellement ils n'ont seulement osé sortir qu'après que je sois parti; en ma présence, ils sont faussement amicaux... "

"Gutachten über die elektrische Behandlung der Kriegs-neurotiker" (Expertise on the Electrical Treatment of War Neurotics) by Prof. Dr. Sigmund Freud, submitted to the Commission instituted to investigate the alleged harsh treatment of war neurotics by Austrian military doctors, 25th February 1920.

Wagner-Jauregg, who had administered faradaic currents in the treatment of war neurotics with tremors, had to appear before the Commission. Freud was one of the two experts in these proceeding. In his memorandum he stressed his personal conviction that Professor Wagner-Jauregg would never have allowed electrical treatment to be intensified to a cruel pitch. At the meeting of the Commission there was a sharp discussion on psycho-analysis.

"When I had to act as expert before a commission for the investigation of the violation of military duties concerned with a charge against Wagner, I once again experienced the hypocrisy and spitefulness of the psychiatrists here. But of course they only dared to come out into the open after I had left; in my presence they are disgustingly friendly..."
