À Martha Bernays, le 17 janvier 1886"Je suis assis auprès de mon ami russe malade, l'entretenant d'une belle découverte que j'ai faite à Vienne et que je n'ai pas publiée parce que je craignais que davantage de choses encore puissent se profiler derrière elle. Ce sur quoi, il me montre ses propres notes sur le même sujet, très exactement, et me dit qu'il a divulgué le résultat à un collègue et rival, qui va s'en servir dans une publication. "Non, cher ami", dis-je, "nous éditerons ceci ensemble - et, qui plus est, immédiatement.
J'ai apporté là plusieurs diapositives, vous en userez comme bon vous semble. Nous les étudierons ensemble, puis vous ferez un schéma, quant à moi, je me chargerai du texte et alors, nous viendrons à bout de ceci ensemble." D'accord. Le premier jour, nous avons passé cinq heures et demie à étudier ensemble les diapositives de jour ou à la lumière d'une lampe, cherchant et doutant sans fin jusqu'à ce qu'il s'affale de tout son long sur le lit.
Je suis parti avec un tel bourdonnement dans la tête que je ne pouvais parvenir à dormir, alors j'ai marché le long des boulevards de dix heures à minuit pour m'aérer. J'étais encore plutôt dubitatif face au problème tout entier, mais le jour suivant, j'entrevis dans mon microscope plusieurs choses d'heureux augure. Je devins fébrile et j'éclaircis tout, et aujourd'hui nous avons obtenu tout ce que nous voulions.
Tout fonctionne très bien, je travaille mon texte, les dessins sont préparés, et dans trois semaines, il vous sera sans doute possible d'ajouter à la collection d'articles scientifiques contenue dans votre portfolio un nouveau petit ouvrage du Dr. F. et du Dr. Darkschewitsch, intitulé : "De la relation du corps Restiform avec la colonne postérieure et son noyau, avec quelques remarques sur deux zones de la Medualla Oblongata".

"I am sitting beside my sick Russian friend, telling him of a nice discovery which I made in Vienna and which I didn't publish because I was afraid there might be still more behind it. Whereupon he shows me his notes on precisely the same subject and tells me that he has divulged the result to a colleague and rival, who is going to use it in a publication. No, dear friend, say I, we will publish that together - and, what's more, at once. I have brought several slides along, you have any amount of them, we will study them together, then you make a drawing, I will do the text and then we will get it off together. Agreed. The first day we spent five and a half hours together studying the slides by day- and lamp- light, searching and doubting endlessly till he fell back on the bed and I left with such a buzzing in my head that I couldn't get to sleep, so I walked the boulevards from 10 to midnight to air myself.
The whole problem still seemed rather doubtful to me, but next day in the microscope I glimpsed a few auspicious things, got all excited, everything cleared up, and today we have all we want. It works out very well, I am mulling over the text, he is brooding over the drawings, and in 3 weeks you may be able to add to your collection of scientific articles in your old portfolio a new little work by Dr. F. and Dr. Darkschewitsch entitled "On the Relation of the Restiform Body to the Posterior Column and its Nucleus, with some remarks on Two Fields of the Medualla Oblongata"
