À Martha Bernays, le 21 janvier 1885"Aujourd'hui j'ai déposé ma demande pour le Docentship et j'ai parlé aux professeurs Ludwig et Meynert. Ce dernier était extrêmement optimiste et il a également fait allusion à la salle neurologique qu'il espère obtenir. J'ai dans l'idée qu'il me prendra avec lui s'il l'obtient. Beaucoup de choses ont dû être dites à mon sujet ce soir. Fleischl a été invité chez Meynert et va glisser quelques mots flatteurs à mon sujet, pendant que Ludwig est allé au restaurant pour travailler sur le dangereux Kundrat, l'anatomiste pathologique. "

"Today I handed in my application for the Docentship and talked to Prof. Ludwig and Meynert. The latter was decidedly optimistic and also mentioned very suggestively the neurological ward on which he is counting. I have an idea that if he gets it he will take me. There must have been a lot of talk about me this evening. Fleischl has been invited to Meynert's and is going to put in a good word for me, while Ludwig has gone to a restaurant to work on the dangerous Kundrat, the pathological anatomist."
